COVID regulations in Germany

The travel restrictions Germany has in place are based on the classification of the countries the travelers are coming from, the amount of time they spent in the respective country of origin, mode of transportation, and their vaccination/COVID recovery status. For full information see https://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/en/einreiseundaufenthalt/EinreiseUndAufenthalt.

Countries can be classified as “areas with variants of concern”, “high incidence areas” or “basic risk areas” or none, as stated in the following pdf document. The document also contains additional information on quarantine requirements, etc. (including the following in more detail).

Some important information:

  • “Persons entering by plane must – irrespective of whether or not they spent time in a risk area – present a negative test result or proof of vaccination or proof of recovery to their carrier prior to departure.”

  • “Persons who have spent time in one of the risks areas (…) within the 10 days prior to entering the Federal Republic of Germany, must follow specific regulations.”

Regulations depend on the classification of the country, the traveler’s vaccination status, (potentially) require a negative test result upon arrival, etc:

  1. “high incidence areas” and “basic risk areas”: required quarantine of 10 days, which “may be ended prematurely or does not have to be started if proof of recovery, proof of vaccination or a negative test result is submitted via the Federal Republic of Germany entry portal https://www.einreiseanmeldung.de”. But in case of “high incidence areas”, the test can only be conducted after 5 days of quarantine in Germany
  2. “areas with variants of concern”: even with a complete vaccination status one cannot end the 14-day quarantine prematurely in that case. There is additional ban on carriage by rail, ship or plane.
