Social events

Monday, August 3: pizza dinner for everyone right after the last session

Practicum session

The practicum is on Tuesday, August 4, 16:45–18:15. Please bring a laptop; everything runs in the browser through Kaggle, so there is nothing to install.

We will replicate both papers below. Minhyuk Nam (minhyukn@andrew.cmu.edu) and KC Pringle (kpringle@andrew.cmu.edu), both PhD students at Carnegie Mellon University, will lead one each. For each paper, you will estimate the model on simulated data and re-run the paper’s counterfactual, so that you can see how the econometric theory is implemented on data.

  • Kang, Ari, Richard Lowery, and Malcolm Wardlaw. “The costs of closing failed banks: A structural estimation of regulatory incentives.” The Review of Financial Studies 28, no. 4 (2015): 1060-1102. Led by Minhyuk Nam.
  • Margiotta, Mary M., and Robert A. Miller. “Managerial compensation and the cost of moral hazard.” International Economic Review 41, no. 3 (2000): 669-719. Led by KC Pringle.

No advance reading is required, though you are welcome to skim either paper in advance.

Kaggle setup by Monday, August 3

Please set up Kaggle by Monday, August 3, and sort out any access problems before we start the session.

  • Create a free account at kaggle.com if you do not have one.
  • Verify your phone number under Settings — without verification, notebooks cannot install packages or use accelerators.
  • Open the three links below, and let us know if any of them will not load for you using the contacts at the end of this section.

DSE 2026 Group    Practicum 1 (Kang, Lowery, and Wardlaw, 2015)    Practicum 2 (Margiotta and Miller, 2000)

Once you are in, a sample notebook in the DSE 2026 Group resources shows the structure if you would like an early look; the full notebook and the dataset go up on Monday.

Teams

Teams are groups of three. If there are people you would like to work with, one of you can register on behalf of the whole team using the form below. If you do not have a team yet, there is no rush: the breaks and social events before Tuesday afternoon are a good chance to meet people, the form has a random-matching option if you would prefer that, and anyone still unmatched will be placed in a team at the start of the session. You can edit your response until Tuesday noon using the same Google account.
